Fully funded PhD Scholarships at the University of Galway

List of fully funded PhD scholarships for international students: 

The Hardiman PhD Scholarships

  • The Hardiman PhD Scholarship, one of the most beneficial scholarships in Ireland, is fully funded for four years, with a stipend of €18,500 p.a. plus fee waiver for students starting their PhD in September 2023.
  • The scholarship is available for programmes undertaken in key areas of research, namely:
  • Enhancing policy and society
  • Enriching creativity and culture
  • Improving health and wellbeing
  • Realising potential through data and enabling technologies
  • Sustaining our planet and people
  • Steps to apply:
    • Nominate a supervisor from the list of supervisors and submit the supervisor form.
    • Complete the application form and submit it by 10th February 2023 (17:00 Irish Time). Ensure to fill the application in English or Irish only.
    • Ensure to provide 2 references that prove your academic eligibility and potential to undertake postgraduate research and submit the same by 10th February 2023 (17:00 Irish Time).
    • The assessors will assess the applications based on the quality and potential of the applicant. The applications will be graded across the following criteria:
    • Personal research statement (max. 50 points)
    • Academic qualifications (max. 30 points)
    • Referees' reports (max. 10 points)
    • Prior research experience (max. 10 points)
    • The reviewing interviews would be conducted through (Skype/MS Teams/Zoom) from 3rd April (Monday) - 14th April (Friday), and the outcome will be announced by early May 2023.

Irish Research Council Scholarship

  • Full funding is provided at a rate of €18,500 p.a. plus a contribution to fees, including non-EU fees, up to a maximum of €5,750 p.a. and eligible direct research expenses of €3,250 p.a.
  • The university offers this scholarship through the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme, designed for new and emerging fields of research or those introducing creative, innovative approaches.
  • The duration of a Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship ranges from one to four years based on the type of degree and the date of first registration.
  • Steps to apply include reading the call documentation carefully to determine your eligibility for the scholarship, as well as ensuring the following primary conditions: 
    • All applicants must be affiliated with an eligible Irish higher education institution or research-performing organisation 
    • Applications will only be accepted in either the Irish or English language 
    • Applications in the following prohibited areas will not be entertained:
  • i) human cloning for reproductive purposes   
    ii) genetic modification of human beings that could make such   changes heritable 
    iii) creation of human embryos solely for the purpose of research or for the purpose of stem cell procurement

PhD Fee Waiver Scheme

  • The Fee Waiver is limited to full-time PhD students holding awards from either the EU Marie Skłodowska Curie schemes or the China Scholarship Council Scholarships.
  • If successful, the fees of the full-time PhD Student are waived for the duration of 4 years only.
  • The fee is waived for a period of 4 years to eligible candidates who, as on the date of applying, should satisfy the following criteria:
    • Be a full-time registered PhD student at NUI Galway 
    • Receive funding through either an EU Marie Skłodowska Curie scheme or a China Scholarship Council Scholarship and not in receipt of any other scholarship or similar funding award that supports the payment of full fees.

SFI Research Centre

Apart from the university and government-funded scholarships, there are multiple PhD scholarships provided by SFI Research Centre.
