Eligibility Criteria to Get PR in the UK

The UK is a country that offers a great future for its residents. Many students want to move in to study in the UK after completing their studies. If you want to live and work in the UK then you need to get UK permanent residency. Some of the eligibility criteria for a PR status are:

  • You can apply for permanent residency in the UK after five years. This happens when you have lived in the country for more than five years.
  • If you have married a citizen of the UK, and have a parent or a dependent relative who happens to be a citizen of the UK, then you can apply for an Indefinite Leave To Remain (ILR).
  • A good code of conduct with no criminal record will help you to gain an ILR easily.
  • You can apply for UK permanent residency if you have a work visa for more than five years. There is an additional criterion that needs to be satisfied. They are:
    • The employer must be willing to sponsor you.
    • You need to have a minimum earning of £25,000. And you also have supporting documents to prove it.
    • There is also an exception in case you happen to be a healthcare provider you don't have to satisfy the criterion mentioned above.

How long does it take to get permanent residency in the UK after completing a PR course?

Once you have completed your studies and earned yourself a degree in the UK, your UK student visa ceases to exist. After the student visa expires, you can also apply for a skilled work visa or a Tier-2 visa.

To get the Tier-2 visa,

  • You should have a minimum earning of around £26,000.
  • You should have a confirmed job with you before applying for the visa. 

UK Permanent Residency is otherwise called 'Indefinite Leave To Remain' (ILR). One of the main prerequisites of an ILR is that you should have been staying in the UK continuously for around 5 years. However, this duration might also vary depending on the type of visa you hold.

How to Apply for PR in the UK

Many international students who want to pursue their higher education in the UK also want to make it their permanent home. The only way to do it is to gain permanent residency in the UK. This can be done by simply following these steps. They are:

  • Admission to a UK University: Get enrolled for a good course at any of the universities in the UK.
  • Applying for a Student Visa: Once your enrollment is confirmed in the university, get a student visa to travel to the UK to pursue your studies and complete it.
  • Enroll for Part-Time Jobs: Students with Tier-4 visas are eligible to work for at least 20 hours a week. You can get yourself enrolled on a part-time basis and work in the UK.
  • Getting a Permanent Job: International students have the great advantage of working for 2 years after their studies. with the 'post student work visa'. But the point that needs to be kept in mind is that it is available only for Tier-2 visa holders. Thus a Tier-2 visa can be applied post studies as well.
  • Apply for UK Permanent Residency: You can apply for a permanent residence card in the UK after the completion of the full five years of a job.
